NEW WAY OF NASAL PACKING AFTER SEPTOPLASTY

Nasal packing after intranasal surgery (septoplasty, ethmoid sinus surgery, nasal turbinate resection, nasal polypotomy etc.) is a traditional method of the post-surgical care. Tampons are used for septum fixation and hemostasis within the period of 24-48 hours. Patients often complain that nasal packing is more unpleasant than the operation itself.
We propose a new method of nasal packing. There are several advantages of this modified nasal packing: easy and painless insertion in the nasal cavity, low stickiness, easy adjustment to a required size, facilitation of easy nasal breathing, and painless and bloodless removal of tampons.
We divided the patients into 2 groups. We used classical nasal packing with gauze tampons on the patients of the first group and applied our modified nasal packing to the patients of the second group. We then evaluated patients’ conditions using a questionnaire that showed significantly better results of using the new method of nasal packing. We conclude that modified nasal tampons can be successfully applied in clinical practice.
